Life from Here to There

Coach’s Corner 00: Beginning

One of the things my wife, Alyson, and I have always told our kids is, “you have to do at least one thing, because doing nothing is not an option.” I think most parents would echo that same statement. My things were baseball and Boy Scouts. For Alyson, it was band and softball. For my son, Maddox (8), he has taken to baseball. For my daughter, Ariyana (10), her thing was previously gymnastics, but most recently she has fallen in love with fast-pitch softball.

Maddox started playing tee-ball when he was five years old and now he is eight. I have been able to help some with coaching and at the very least I have tried to stay an active parent in helping when and where I am needed. For the most part, he has been fortunate to have had some great coaches and the need for parental or even part-time assistant coaching has not been a necessity.

Ariyana, however, has had a consistent need for assistant coaches. This past Spring of 2018 she joined a local 10u (10 and under) travel team named QABQuality At-Bat. The head coach asked if I would be willing to come on board as a true assistant coach. I graciously said yes and it appreciated him asking me. I thought I would be teaching the girls how to play softball and maybe a life lesson or two. Little did I know how much they would be teaching me along the way.

To be continued…

This is the first post in a series of posts grouped under “Coach’s Corner“. I am going to do my best to write about what I have learned and am continuing to learn.
